Restaurants That Are Foie Gras-Free Due to VFA:

Foie Gras, A Disgrace to Our City

A force-fed duck chokes on his own vomit
|
Nearly 500,000 ducks and geese are killed each year in the United States to produce the delicacy foie gras. These peaceful creatures spend their lives stuffed into tiny, feces and vomit-covered cages and pens, and each have a metal pipe rammed down their throat three times per day to have enormous quantities of food forced into their stomachs. So much food is stuffed down their throats that many birds' stomachs literally burst open after being fed, leading to a gruesome death. Denied fresh air, access to the outdoors, and even natural light, the ducks and geese on foie gras farm lead short lives of misery and unnecessary suffering.
No kind, compassionate human being can say that it is ethically acceptable to force innocent animals to endure such horrors. That is why Voices for Animals of Western Pennsylvania (VFA) is asking everyone who can empathize with these poor creatures to help us to eliminate foie gras from the menus of restaurants in the Pittsburgh area. We are currently conducting a campaign in which we are working with the owners and chefs of restaurants that currently sell foie gras with the aim of having them remove it from their menus. Every restaurant, distributor and grocery store we encourage to stop selling foie gras brings us one step closer to a world that treats animals with compassion and respect.

Geese are force fed 1/3 of their body weight every day with a metal pipe

It is important to stress that the constant force-feeding of these ducks and geese and the high illness and mortality rate that come from a life of being force-fed enormous quantities of food are necessary for foie gras production. Because foie gras is diseased liver, the animals need to be forced to live extremely unhealthy lives full of suffering to produce foie gras. In addition, the animals need to be slaughtered in order for their flesh to be sold as food. In other words, it is impossible to produce foie gras humanely. In fact, foie gras is so inherently cruel that dozens of countries including Poland, the U.K., Switzerland, and most recently Israel have all banned it’s production.
Most recently, the state of California banned the sale and production of foie gras due to the abuse ducks and geese endure in forced-feeding.
